Red and ivory floral carpets in the Persian vocabulary date back to the early Safavid court ateliers, where master weavers worked from cartoons drawn by miniaturist painters and the floral repertoire was treated with the same care as a manuscript page. The Sherry drawing in front of you sits in that long lineage, simplified and opened up for contemporary rooms but recognisably descended from the same vocabulary.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months to complete this 8' x 10' carpet in India. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in small batches so the red carries tonal range across the surface rather than reading as a flat block. The drawing was transferred to a paper cartoon and read knot by knot at the loom, with each weaver tying around two thousand knots an hour against a vertical beam. The back was finished with a careful clip that brings the floral drawing into clean relief.

The composition

A deep red field with an ivory central medallion drawn in fine floral spray, vine work spreading into the corners. The red is built from layered madder, which is why the colour shifts from garnet at the centre to a softer brick at the edges; chemical red is uniform, vegetable red is alive. Over a decade the red will deepen toward oxblood and the ivory will warm into bone, the way old Persian florals settle into themselves.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted Persian-tradition red-and-ivory florals from established Western dealers list at three to four times the price asked here. This is a new weaving in the same cartoon vocabulary, on the same loom geometry, in comparably prepared wool. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, particularly as the red matures into the deeper end of its register.

The piece in a room

The red ground holds light beautifully under low household lamps, which is why this drawing has historically anchored libraries, dining rooms, and formal living rooms more than daylight-flooded spaces. 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sets a primary living area or a six-to-eight seat dining footprint. Pair with cream or putty walls, walnut joinery, and brass; avoid competing patterns in upholstery.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and never rub a saturated red wool pile. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years. With that schedule the carpet runs eighty years and develops the soft surface depth aged Persian wool always reaches.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
