Beige and rust together are the most legible pairing in the Ziegler vocabulary. The two share a warm undertone that lets them sit against each other without competing, and the contrast is gentle enough that the floral lattice reads as drawing rather than as figure against ground. The Ziegler workshops worked the combination almost from the firm's first decade, and the carpet in front of you continues that lineage.

Three weavers held this loom for roughly five months. Hand-spun wool was tied to a cotton foundation, then taken through a slow finishing wash that pulled the colour down into the soft, walked-in tone the design has always been finished against. Vegetable dyes were prepared from madder root for the rust, walnut hull for the beige, oak gall for the deeper browns, and a measured lot of indigo for the linear accents in the vine. The dye lots were small and varied deliberately so the field carries the abrash a single chemical bath would never produce.

The composition

A pale beige field carrying a moderately scaled floral lattice in faded rust, walnut, and pale sage, framed by a slim border that ends without weight. The rust is the kind that takes years to settle in synthetic-dyed work but arrives close to its final tone here because the madder was matured at length. Read closely the field carries three values of beige across the rug; from a distance it reads as one warm ground.

What you are buying

Vegetable-dyed Zieglers in this scale and palette sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of four to seven lakh and the antique originals at multiples of that figure when condition permits. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, the carpet is woven to the antique density in the same hand-spun wool the originals were made in. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) holds the centre of a primary living room or a six-seater dining setting. The beige and rust ground reads warmer than ivory or green Zieglers and pairs cleanly with walnut, brass, lime-plaster walls, and stone floors. Lighter walls float the rug forward; darker walls settle it into the architecture. The borders show comfortably on three sides under a sofa group.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the wear cycles evenly through the wool. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth immediately, working from the outer edge inward. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years. The rust will deepen toward terracotta over the next decade with the kind of patina the antique trade pays for.
