Carpet Size Guide

Choosing the right carpet size makes the difference between a room that feels balanced and one that feels off. This guide covers the most-bought sizes for Indian homes — with room dimensions, furniture placement tips, and which size fits your space.

The Golden Rule

Leave 18–24 inches of bare floor visible around the carpet's edges. This frames the carpet and visually expands the room. Wall-to-wall carpeting is rarely recommended in Indian homes due to monsoon humidity and ease of cleaning.

By Room

Living Room

Most common Indian apartment living room (12'×14'): use a 5' × 8' carpet.

Independent house drawing room (14'×18'): use a 8' × 10' or 9' × 12'.

Open-plan layout (large): use a 12' × 15' to define the seating zone.

Furniture placement: for an 8'×10' under a 7' sofa, the front legs of the sofa rest on the carpet (back legs on the floor). All seats around a coffee table should sit on the carpet.

Bedroom

Foot of bed (most popular): a 5' × 8' placed perpendicular to the bed.

Under the bed: a 8' × 10' with 18–24" extending on each side.

Two side runners: 2'×6' on each side of the bed.

Dining Room

6-seater table: 6' × 9' — chairs slide on/off without catching.

8-seater table: 8' × 10'.

Larger banquet: 9' × 12'.

Pooja Room / Mandir

Small pooja corner: 3' × 5' in maroon, burgundy, or ivory.

Mandir mat: 2'×3' compact size.

Kitchen / Hallway

Hallway: Runner 2'×6' to 2'×8' depending on length.

Kitchen: Anti-slip runner 2'×4' or 2'×6'. Choose cotton or synthetic for easy washing.

How to Measure Your Room

1. Use a measuring tape to record the room's longest and shortest dimensions in feet.
2. Subtract 2–3 feet from each dimension to allow 12–18" of bare floor on each side.
3. Match the result to the closest standard size in the table above.
4. For odd-shaped rooms or specific layouts, consider a custom size.
