Vegetable dye work in the Sultanabad lineage rests on a single decision made before any wool touches the loom. The dye master matches each colour to a plant source, prepares the bath in copper, and lets the wool steep for hours rather than minutes so the pigment binds to the fibre rather than coating it. The black ground in this carpet was struck from oak gall and iron, the beige from undyed and lightly walnut-washed wool, the small accents from indigo and madder. The result is a palette that will shift across the next two decades, never the same colour twice.

Two weavers shared the loom in India for close to six months. Around 2.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by hand against a vertical beam, each one set by feel against the thickness of the cotton warp. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool, chosen for its fibre length and its willingness to take deep saturation. After cutting, the carpet was washed three times in cold water and laid in the sun to fix the dye and lift the natural sheen of the wool.

The composition

A black ground that reads anthracite in lamplight and warmer charcoal in daylight. Beige floral repeats run edge to edge with the open Ziegler density that makes the pattern legible at room scale. Small ivory and rust accents punctuate the field. The colour will not stay where it began. The black will mellow toward bronze in five years, the beige will warm into bone, and the rust will deepen. A vegetable-dyed carpet ages the way a leather chair does.

What you are buying

Antique Sultanabad carpets in this palette and condition trade at international auction in the range of $15,000 to $35,000 when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom, and at roughly an eighth of that price. A carpet of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no equivalent class of object you walk on that holds value the same way.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a six-seat dining table or a full sofa with a pair of armchairs above it. The black ground asks for warm walls in cream, oat, or unbleached linen rather than cool greys. Brass and bronze metalwork, walnut and teak furniture, and natural fibre upholstery all sit comfortably above this palette. Direct sunlight does the carpet a favour rather than a harm.

Conservation

Rotate one half-turn every spring and autumn so the pile wears evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub, and address any spill within the first thirty minutes. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this routine the carpet will outlive a generation.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
