Ziegler & Co., the Manchester-based firm that opened a buying office in northern Iran in 1883, commissioned weavers to soften the dense floral repeats of classical Persia into the open compositions that the new Anglo-American collectors preferred. The beige reading of the Ziegler vocabulary in this rug belongs to the most pastoral end of the tradition, where the saturation is brought down and the wool itself becomes the principal visual material.

Three weavers shared the upright loom for nearly six months. Hand-spun wool was dyed in small lots over copper vats, with the beige left close to the natural fleece colour and the floral accents drawn from madder, indigo, weld, and walnut hull. Around 1.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied row by row on a cotton warp, beaten flat, and brought to pile depth with a hand-shear.

The composition

A soft beige field carrying floral arabesques in faded madder red, muted indigo, ivory, and walnut brown. The composition is open. The central medallion is rendered in soft ochre rather than the deeper colours that characterise other Persian traditions. The border holds a single restrained guard rather than the layered borders that turn lesser Sultanabads busy. Over the first decade the beige will warm into a closer cream and the colour accents will deepen.

Antique Ziegler-Sultanabads with early twentieth-century attribution and comparable condition trade at international auction in the range of twenty to forty thousand US dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same Ziegler tradition on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, at a fraction of the antique price. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary drawing room or a formal dining set. The beige Ziegler ground reads against cream plaster walls, against pale oak floors, and against deep walnut joinery. It pairs with linen upholstery in any neutral, with brass lighting, and with mid-century walnut. The composition prefers warm white walls to cool grey, and rewards rooms that lean toward calm rather than statement.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth from the edge inward. The pale field shows soiling sooner than darker palettes; a hand-wash by a wool conservator every four to five years is sensible.
