The traditional ivory-ground floral has been the most copied composition in the carpet trade for two centuries because it is the hardest to do well. An ivory field shows every irregularity in the dye, every uneven knot, every wash that ran too hot. Weavers approach it the way painters approach a white primer: with a clear plan and no margin for second guesses. The carpet in front of you was woven against that discipline.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months and a half. The wool was hand-spun, tied to a cotton foundation, and taken through a slow finishing wash that pulls the ivory toward the bone-warm register an antique field tends to carry. Vegetable dyes were prepared from madder for the rose tonics, walnut for the soft browns, indigo for the minor accents, and pomegranate skin for the gentle yellow that warms the field. The dye lots were small and varied deliberately so the field carries the abrash that a single chemical bath would never produce.
The composition
An ivory ground with a tightly drawn floral lattice in faded rose, walnut, and pale indigo, framed by a single restrained border. The colour structure depends on tone rather than contrast. Nothing in the rug is loud. The eye reads the medallion zone first because it is slightly denser, then the lattice, then the border, in the same order a painter sequences a still life. Direct sunlight will warm the ivory toward parchment over five years and the rug will deepen rather than fade.
What you are buying
Vegetable-dyed Ziegler-tradition carpets of this scale and ivory palette sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of four to seven lakh, and the antique originals at multiples of that figure. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, this is a working bargain on a piece woven to the same density and in the same fibre as the antiques. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) holds the centre of a primary living room or a six-seater dining setting. An ivory field opens a small room and quietens a large one, which is the practical reason the design has remained the most ordered ivory-ground composition since 1900. The palette pairs with cream plaster, oak, brass, and washed linen rather than competing with strong upholstery.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the ivory ages evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off, suction only. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth immediately, working from the outer edge in. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool conservator every five to seven years. Stored rolled with pile facing inward, never folded.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
