uari silk is the recovered fibre from worn-out and discarded silk saris, hand-stripped from the cloth, re-spun, and re-skeined for weaving. The fibre carries the residual dye from its previous life, which means a sari silk rug is built from threads that already hold dozens of historical colours, and no two skeins ever read the same. Pairing sari silk with the ikat weaving idea, where the dye pattern is set on the yarn before weaving rather than on the surface afterward, gives the rug a doubly layered chromatic complexity.
Three weavers shared the loom for six months. The pile is a wool ground with sari silk worked into the cartoon at the points where the ikat pattern called for the high chromatic lift only recovered silk can provide. The silk arrives in skeins that have to be sorted by tone before they go to the loom because the residual dyes shift batch to batch. Knots are Persian asymmetric tied by feel against the loom beam, with the master weaver placing the silk skeins by hand to control the chromatic relationships.
The composition
An ikat field carries soft-edged geometric forms in saffron, magenta, indigo, deep teal, ochre, and recovered ivory. The silk skeins lift each colour into a slightly different register from the wool ground. There is no border. The composition reads as a layered textile memory, the colours of the original saris ghosting through the new cartoon. From across the room the rug reads as one chromatic mood. Up close, the layered history opens up.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted wool and sari silk ikat carpets at 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) from the contemporary studios that work in this fibre reach $9,000 to $18,000 in the European and Uu trade. The piece is woven on the same kind of loom by weavers with the same training, sold direct from India. uari silk rugs are unrepeatable by definition because the fibre supply is itself unrepeatable. Each piece is a one-off.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary bedroom or a medium living space. The multi-colour ikat palette wants quiet walls and quiet upholstery. Chalk and warm white plaster hold the chromatic complexity. Pairs with bleached oak, blackened steel, raw linen upholstery, and a single major work of contemporary art on the principal wall.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug twice a year. Vacuum weekly on the lowest suction setting, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with clean cotton, no rubbing on the silk. uari silk is more delicate than mulberry silk, so all professional cleaning should be done by a conservator with experience of recovered-fibre rugs. Wash every five years. The piece serves fifty to seventy years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
