Sari silk as a rug fibre is a relatively young material with very old roots. The silk in this carpet started as worn wedding saris and ceremonial cloth, retired from use, then unravelled by hand and respun on a charkha into the variegated yarn that now forms the pile. Each thread carries a quiet history of an earlier dye bath, an earlier weft, an earlier life, which is why no two metres of sari silk are ever truly identical in tone.
The ikat field across the surface is set on the warps before knotting, in the resist tradition that travelled out of the Indian subcontinent and into Central Asia by the eighth century. Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months, tying knot after knot against a vertical beam to build the soft jagged edges that ikat alone produces. The cotton foundation holds the silk pile flat, and the green tones are reinforced by indigo over-dye on selected hanks to keep the verdancy from drifting toward yellow as the rug ages.
The composition
A muted forest green carries the field, broken by ivory, ochre, and a deeper bottle tone where the resist has bled. The ikat blur means there are no hard edges anywhere on the carpet, only soft transitions, the way watercolour pools at the edge of a brushstroke. Sari silk reflects light differently along its grain, so the green reads cooler from one end of the room and warmer from the other. Walk around it and the rug appears to breathe.
What you are buying
An 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) hand-knotted recycled sari silk ikat at this density and condition would be quoted by a Western dealer at three to four times this price, and antique Central Asian ikats of equivalent fibre quality have crossed the block at Sotheby's London in the £8,000 to £15,000 band. The fibre is reclaimed silk, the labour is six months of three pairs of hands, and the design is a living tradition. The piece appreciates with wear rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
At 8' x 10', the rug suits a primary living area arranged around a low coffee table or a long dining setting under a six-to-eight seat table. Green of this depth reads best against off-white, lime-washed plaster, or warm grey walls. Pair with brass, raw teak, and linen upholstery. Avoid putting it under heavy patterned drapery; the ikat needs the visual room to do its work.
Conservation
Rotate end to end every six months so light and footfall age the silk evenly. Vacuum on suction only, never with a beater bar, which will cut silk fibres at the surface. Blot any spill with white cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every six to eight years and the rug will see a hundred.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
