Tan is a category the carpet trade learned from the Ziegler workshops. Before the late nineteenth century, Persian floral fields tended either to ivory or to the deep madder grounds that the classical schools preferred; the Ziegler weavers introduced the warm tan-honey register that sat between the two. The pattern in front of you, named for a sitter the design was first drawn for, works in that same in-between space.

Three weavers held this loom for around five months. The wool here was hand-spun and tied to a cotton foundation, then taken through an unhurried wash that drew the colour down into the warm, walked-in tone the design was originally developed against. Vegetable dyes were prepared from walnut hull for the tan ground, madder root for the rose tonics in the floral repeats, oak gall for the deeper browns in the vine, and a measured lot of indigo for the rare blue accents that punctuate the field. The dye lots were small and rotated through the weave so the field carries genuine abrash.

The composition

A warm tan field with a moderately scaled floral lattice in walnut, soft rose, and pale sage, contained by a single border that closes without weight. The colour structure reads as a single warm ground rather than as figure against ground because the lattice tones share an undertone with the field. Tan rugs hold against more wall colours than any other Ziegler palette because the field already sits between cool and warm. Over the next decade the tan will deepen toward honey and the lattice will read closer to the field.

What you are buying

Ziegler-tradition carpets of this scale and palette sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of four to seven lakh and the antique originals at multiples of that. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, this is a working bargain on a piece woven to the same density and in the same hand-spun wool. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the longer it is walked the closer it moves to the antique register collectors pay for.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. A tan field carries equally well against cream plaster, deep blue panelling, sage green walls, and brick. The piece sits cleanly under a six-seater table or a primary sofa with the borders showing on three sides. Pairs with walnut, brass, washed linen, and oak floors.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the wear cycles evenly through the wool. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth immediately, working from the outer edge inward. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years. Stored rolled with pile facing inward, never folded.
