Ziegler is a design language rather than a place. A Manchester firm with a buying office in Tabriz commissioned weavers in the 1880s to soften classical Persian repeats into the gentler, larger scaled patterns the new western drawing room preferred. The Jacob carries that lineage forward. A loose floral repeat across an open beige field, brown vine work doing the structural drawing, the whole composition measured to read at room scale.

Three weavers shared the loom in northern India for around five and a half months. The foundation is cotton, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot the Persian asymmetric structure the Ziegler tradition has used since its first commissions. Walnut hull carried the brown register, madder root the warmer accents, and a small quantity of indigo deepened the floral centres. Each colour was matured in copper for several weeks before the wool was dipped, the way a Ziegler workshop would have done it in the 1890s.

The composition

A beige ground holds a soft brown floral vine in continuous repeat. The pattern is open by design, with negative space between the motifs as deliberate as the drawing itself. A single guard band in deeper walnut frames the field. The colour will move slowly. Over a decade the beige warms toward bone and the brown deepens, with the indigo accents growing more assertive as the surface oils settle. The carpet is built to age in front of its owner.

A Ziegler pattern carpet at 8' x 10', sold by a Western dealer, sits between four and eight lakh equivalent. This piece is woven in the same idiom, in the same fibre, on the same kind of loom, and priced against the workshop. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the defining property of a serious hand knotted wool carpet and the reason these pieces survive in collections for generations.

The beige and brown palette suits oak and walnut joinery equally, accepts brass and aged bronze, and reads warmer against chalk walls than against deeper plaster. Conservation

Rotate a half turn each season so window light and footfall age the carpet evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. The piece is built for several generations of use.
