Transitional weaving sits between two long traditions. It carries the construction discipline of classical Persian work and the lighter, more pictorial drawing the European drawing room asked for in the late nineteenth century. The Opera school of design pushes that transitional vocabulary further: a softer central medallion, more open ground, and a measured introduction of silk into a wool pile to lift the highlights of the drawing into a different reflective register.

Three weavers shared a vertical loom for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool with silk highlight passes at the medallion and corner spandrels, knotted by hand row by row on a cotton warp. The silk takes the same dye baths as the wool but at higher saturation, which is why the silk passes appear to glow when raking light crosses the rug. The beige ground is undyed wool blended from two fleece batches. The lighter accent tones come from a controlled walnut wash. Each dye batch is matured in copper vats before the wool is lowered.

The composition

A beige field holds a central medallion drawn in pale silk highlights, with corner spandrels echoing the medallion at lower saturation. The border is restrained: a narrow guard band, a main floral repeat in beige and ivory, and a closing guard. Under direct light the silk passes catch and release as the eye moves across the field, an effect the wool body does not produce on its own. The beige carries a slow tonal drift from one end of the rug to the other, the trace of the dye lots in the wool baths.

What you are buying

Comparable Indo-Persian silk-highlighted carpets at this scale sell on Western dealer retail floors in the $10,000 to $25,000 range. This is a contemporary hand-knotted weaving sold direct from the workshop, in hand-spun wool with real silk highlights, knotted by hand to the standards the tradition expects. The price reflects weaver-months and material grade rather than the secondary-market markup attached to Western retail. Hand-knotted silk-and-wool weaving of this build appreciates with sympathetic use.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the standard primary-room scale. It carries a sectional plus loungers or a six-seater dining table set above the field. The beige palette is unusually flexible against wall colour. Cream and chalk walls let the silk passes glow forward as the focal event. Saturated walls in deep blue or olive let the rug settle as a quiet ground. Brass, leather, and undyed linen are the easiest companions.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn twice a year so wear distributes evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, never with a rotating brush bar; silk passes are damaged by mechanical agitation. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth at first contact and avoid water on the silk areas. A wool-and-silk-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
