Long before the Ziegler workshops were named, the open-field floral carpet was being woven across the Persian highlands in a hundred regional variations. What the European trading houses did in the 1880s was codify the language. They selected the open layouts, asked weavers to drop a colour or two from the classical palette, and softened the saturations toward the muted greens and tans the European drawing rooms preferred. This carpet sits inside that codified vocabulary and is woven in India to the same standard.

Two weavers shared the loom for around five months. Roughly 2.3 million Persian-asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, the wool hand-spun and dyed in small lots that leave subtle abrash visible against the light. The carpet was washed three times in cold water after cutting and laid in the sun to set the dye. This finishing wash is what separates a Ziegler-tradition carpet from a generic Persian-style production. Without it the wool reads dull rather than soft.

The composition

A beige field carries floral and palmette work in faded olive, ivory, and rust. The corner pendants and central medallion sit at the classical proportions of the Ziegler vocabulary. The border holds a single vine band against a deeper beige guard, restrained where lesser carpets layer three or four borders and turn the eye away from the field. The palette will warm with age as the wool oxidises, and the rust accents will deepen toward terracotta over the next decade.

What you are buying

Western dealers list comparable hand-knotted Ziegler-tradition carpets at three to five times this price. The yarn, loom, and knot count are identical. The cost difference is supply chain, not craft. Buying in India removes the dealer margins and the ocean-freight overhead. The carpet retains value with use, the wool deepens with age, and the design vocabulary survives every change in interior fashion. A hand-knotted carpet on this scale is closer to a piece of furniture than a soft furnishing.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a sofa and two armchairs in a primary living room, with the carpet visible at the edges. In a dining room it sits under a six-seater with the chairs fully accommodated on the pile when pulled out. The beige and olive palette reads particularly well against limewashed cream walls, against terracotta, and against pale sage paint. Walnut and teak furniture provides the natural ground.

Conservation

Rotate one half-turn every spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no beater bar. Treat any spill immediately with cold water and a clean cotton cloth, blotting from the outside in toward the centre of the spill. Professional wool wash every five years preserves both colour and pile depth. With this routine the carpet stays in service for fifty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
