Black grounds in Ziegler weaving are an unusual choice with a specific consequence. The dark field pulls the floral drawing forward as if it were lit from behind, and turns the surrounding palette of ivory, ochre, and faded rose into something closer to enamel work than to a printed textile. Period weavers reserved the choice for buyers who wanted a carpet that worked at night, under candlelight or low electric, rather than one that depended on daylight.

About 2.4 million asymmetric knots, tied across roughly five months by three weavers sharing a vertical loom in India.
