Black is the rarest of the overdye outcomes because true black on wool requires either repeated dye passes or a desaturation process severe enough to push the underlying colours below visibility. Most workshops avoid the format for that reason. The carpets that come out of it well, where the field reads as deep, even black with the under-pattern visible only as low textural variation, represent the technical limit of the overdye tradition. This rug is built at that limit.
The carpet was assembled over four months by three weavers. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at standard density using the symmetric knot. The completed carpet was sliced into rectangular tiles, hand-stitched along the grain, then lowered into a black aniline bath calibrated to a high alkalinity. The bath was held at temperature for an extended duration to drive the dye into the wool fibre. After dyeing, the pile was sheared to eight millimetres and the back was reinforced with a fresh cotton scrim before final dressing.
The composition
A deep black field carrying low-contrast under-imagery from the parent rugs, visible only as faint shadow variation when light hits the surface at a low angle. The colour reads as charcoal-into-pitch depending on lighting, and some panels hold a slightly browner cast where the source wool already carried red, while others sit closer to true black where the original was indigo or olive. The seams form a regular architectural grid. Daylight reveals the under-imagery; lamp light pushes the field flat toward absolute black.
What you are buying
Black overdyes in this construction list with European dealers at 2,000 to 3,200 GBP because of the technical demand of the colour. Here the rug is offered at 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300, well below that international band. Hand-knotted wool engineered for seventy years of life, with a colour at the technical limit of what the overdye process supports, sits structurally outside the price categories of any printed or tufted alternative.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) carries a primary living configuration or fits a six-place dining table. Black at this depth is the most architectural floor object available; it absorbs the eye rather than reflecting it, and it lets every other element in the room read against it. Pair with bone walls, plaster, soft greys, raw oak, walnut, brass, leather, linen. Strong art reads particularly well above a black field. Keep upholstery muted in colour and avoid layered patterns nearby.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Black wool shows lint and dust faster than coloured wool, so a quick weekly pass is essential. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed flat. Schedule a wool-conservator hand-wash every four to five years. The rug is built to run seventy years and the black will continue to settle into a richer depth across that span.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
