Black and red is the hardest pairing in the carpet vocabulary because there is no third tone to soften the contact between the two values. The black has to read as black, not as bruised charcoal; the red has to commit to a single saturation across the field. The Naturecraft tradition takes that uncompromising pairing and works it through a hand-spun wool surface that lets the dye carry the slight irregularity machine-spun yarn cannot produce. The result is a graphic floor without losing the warmth wool gives a room.

Three weavers worked the loom for around four and a half months in India. Around 2.4 million asymmetric knots tied against cotton warps in hand-spun wool. The black was pulled from a layered iron-mordant bath that produces depth without the green undertone synthetic black tends to throw; the red was drawn from madder root matured in copper vats for two weeks before the wool was lowered. The piece was finished with a slow wash that flattens new-fibre brightness into a measured surface.

The composition

The black ground carries the field with absolute commitment, no transitional tone, no border softening. The red runs through the design as a focal accent rather than a competing ground, with the proportions calibrated so the eye rests on the black and reads the red as incident. Over the years the black will hold; wool dyed at this depth does not fade. The red will lighten slightly and reveal the brick undertone the madder carries.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted black-ground carpets in 8' x 10' format with comparable construction trade at western dealer pricing in the range of $4,000 to $8,000. This is a contemporary weaving on hand-built looms, in hand-spun wool, by weavers trained in the Indian floor-loom apprenticeship. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The price point reflects the piece working in a more democratic register than the auction-grade weavings, but the construction is the same.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a medium living area, or a home office. The black-and-red palette pairs with chalk walls and dark furniture, or with bone walls and walnut furniture for a softer reading. The composition expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room; competing patterned upholstery flattens the contrast.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so foot traffic ages the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, working from the outside of the spill inward. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Cared for this way the carpet runs sixty to eighty years on a floor.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
