Black is a colour that hand-knotted wool resists. Pure carbon black in a wool fibre tends to flatten, to read as ink on paper rather than as textile. The black overdyed patchwork solves the problem by relying on the original colours of the source village rugs to throw their own faint warmth into the wash. The result is a rug that reads as a deep, near-charcoal black at a distance and reveals the soft auburn, indigo, and madder ghosts of the underlying drawings on closer inspection.
Two to three weavers shared the loom across approximately four and a half months for this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) piece. The black bath itself is the most demanding part of the production. It combines iron-tannin chemistry with a longer immersion time so the wool draws pigment to the depth required without the surface colour going dull. After dyeing, the panels were assembled by hand with cotton thread, supported with fresh cotton foundation, and finished with a warm wash to settle the colour and release the natural lustre of the older fibres.
The composition
The drawings come through as low-contrast tonal shifts rather than as visible pattern. A medallion in one panel, a corner of stepped border in another, an isolated geometric motif somewhere in the centre. The seams between fragments form a quiet architectural grid that lets the eye organise the field. From a distance the rug reads as a single deep black plane. From closer the entire history of older village weaving begins to show through.
What you are buying
Galleries that handle overdyed patchworks in black price the technique between $5,500 and $11,000 depending on size and provenance. This rug arrives at ₹94,399 against an MSRP of ₹3,77,300, a clearance-tier position. Each piece is unrepeatable because no two underlying fragments can be sourced twice. Hand-knotted wool of this make-up holds its value as the dye settles and the wool acquires patina over the first decade of use.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) anchors a sofa-and-two-chair grouping or supports a six-seater dining table. Black is the most architectural reading of the patchwork canon. It pairs with bone walls, raw oak, brass lighting, and saturated upholstery in jewel tones. Against a white-on-white interior the rug becomes the entire graphic event of the room. Against a saturated room the rug withdraws into the architecture and supports the upholstery to lead.
Conservation
Suction-only vacuuming weekly. Never a beater bar. Rotate the rug each spring and autumn so daylight and footfall age the surface evenly. Blot spills with white cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool conservator every seven years. Black wool requires particularly gentle washing because the dye chemistry is more sensitive to alkali and to chlorine than warmer colours.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
