By the late nineteenth century the buyers of Persian carpets in London and New York had begun asking for less crowded fields, paler grounds, more breathing room between motifs. A firm called Ziegler set up looms in the Sultanabad region and translated that brief into the airy vine-and-palmette compositions that still carry its name. What you are looking at is the contemporary chapter of that tradition.

2 weavers, 4 months of weaving. The cartoon was prepared by a designer working in scale on graph paper, then transferred to the loom one column of knots at a time. The wool was hand-spun on a charkha to keep the lustre that mill-spun yarn loses in the carding. The rug is offered in a beige and blue register, made in India.

The composition

Beige and blue carries the field. The pattern works because the negative space is allowed to breathe. The motifs hold their place, the field around them stays open, and the eye is given somewhere to rest between figures. That openness is what separates a good repeat from a busy one, and what allows the rug to sit under furniture without the pattern crowding the room. Pairs well with linen, leather, walnut, and oak. Pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room.

The piece in a room

The format here anchors a primary bedroom or a compact living room. The rug sits below a queen bed or in front of a three-seater sofa, with the pattern reading as the field that pulls everything else into relation. Walls in plaster, putty, or warm white hold the saturation, while darker walls let the rug settle into the architecture as a considered ground.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care, the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners. Storage between uses should be flat or rolled around a tube, never folded, with a layer of unbleached cotton between the pile and any other surface.
