Vegetable-dyed floral carpets in the round trace their lineage to the eighteenth-century European demand for centred medallion compositions that read complete from any direction. Three weavers shared the loom for close to six months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, tied in the Persian asymmetric, with the dye work prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall. The dye baths were matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered, which is what gives vegetable dye the depth and the slight irregularity that synthetic dye cannot reproduce. The round shape was completed on a circular loom geometry rather than cut from a rectangular weaving.

The composition

A central rosette in faded ochre, surrounded by three rings of indigo vine work and palmette repeats in beige, brown, and a soft rust. The colour relationship rests on the wool wash that lowered the saturation toward antique tones; the carpet reads as already settled rather than as new. The floral work is curvilinear without being busy, with the negative space between motifs giving the eye somewhere to rest. Over time the ochre will warm toward amber and the indigo will deepen.

Maintained this way the carpet will run a hundred years.
