The Southwestern carpet vocabulary descends from the Navajo and Pueblo weaving traditions of the American desert, with the geometry tightened in the late nineteenth century through trade with railroad merchants who wanted the designs scaled up for Anglo interiors. The visual language has held because the geometry is built into the loom itself.

Two weavers shared a horizontal loom for around four months. The yarn was hand-spun and dyed in small batches and packed weft by weft into the warp. The flat structure carries the design through both faces and sits close to the floor without bulk.

The composition

A red register is the working colour of the field. The geometry is built to read across distance and to reward close approach in equal measure. Small-batch vat dyeing produces a slight tonal drift that gives the surface its sense of life; from any standing position the rug reads as one quiet ground rather than a tile that repeats. Across the first year the saturation will tighten and the field will deepen by half a stop as the wool oxidises against ambient light.

What you are buying

A hand-knotted carpet of this scale and density is an investment object as much as a domestic one. Comparable nineteenth-century weavings, when they reach Western dealers, sell at four to six times this number. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the wool tightens into the design as it ages.

The piece in a room

At 4' x 6' the rug works under a hall console, beside a bed, or as a hearth piece in front of a fireplace. It carries a strong individual presence at this scale and is read close to before it is read across. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation of the field; pale walls push the palette forward as a focal element. The piece does not need a furniture frame to anchor it.

Conservation

The piece will give a working life of decades with consistent low-level care. Rotate it end for end at the spring and autumn change. Vacuum once a week on suction, with no rotary action against the pile. Blot any spill immediately and work from the perimeter inward. Send the rug for a wool-conservator hand wash every five to seven years to keep the foundation clear and the dye saturation honest.
