Gabbeh is the older, freer cousin of the formal Persian rug. Qashqai and Luri shepherds wove Gabbehs for their own use, on portable looms, with a thicker pile and a coarser knot, and the visual language stayed deliberately simple. A single animal, a tree, an ochre field, a few dyed bands.
Two weavers, five to six months of work. The pile is long-staple highland wool, lustrous after the final wash. The dyes are plant-derived. Every Gabbeh carries the slight irregularity that hand-spun wool and small-batch vats produce.
The composition
Built on a multi-toned palette. The field is held open enough that the eye moves across it rather than landing in any single place. The slight irregularities in dye saturation are not flaws; they are the signature of wool batched in small lots and dyed in copper vats by hand. Photographic accuracy was never the goal. The colour the rug carries in person is warmer, softer, and longer-lived than any image of it can suggest. The geometry is sized for the room rather than for the photograph; the rug rewards a close look as much as a standing one.
What you are buying
Antique workshop carpets in this tradition with comparable scale and condition appear at international auction at multiples of this price when they appear at all. This is a new weaving on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, to a comparable density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is not a property any other object on a floor can claim at any price.
The piece in a room
4' x 12' is the working living-room scale for a flat or a primary bedroom. The rug holds a three-seater sofa with a chair on each side, or floats centred under a six-seat dining table. Walnut or oak floors set the palette off; pale stone lets the rug carry the room as the dominant ground colour. Furniture sits with the front legs on the rug and the back legs on the floor, which is the canonical living-room arrangement at this size.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly across both ends of the field. Vacuum weekly with suction only, the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth and work from the outside in; never rub or scrub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years to clear the foundation and refresh the dye. With this care the rug runs sixty to a hundred years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
