The tribal Eros pattern reads as ikat at first glance and as something more deliberate on a second look. Ikat is a resist-dyed weft that produces its blur because the thread is dyed before it is woven. This rug arrives at the same softness through hand-knotting, which means each apparent ikat shimmer is in fact a small cluster of hand-tied knots in shifting reds. The technique is laborious and the result is precise where ikat is approximate.

Around three weavers worked the 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field for roughly six months. The pile is sari silk, hand-spun in India from the cuttings of handloom sari production, and tied to a cotton foundation. Sari silk holds the heather of dozens of earlier dye baths, and when the dominant colour is red the result is a field that carries crimson, brick, terracotta, and faint plum within the same square inch.

The composition

The ground reads as red at room distance and as a dense weave of red values on approach. Tribal motifs in ivory, charcoal, and warm gold cross the field in horizontal bands. The drawing has the slightly irregular cadence of village weaving rather than the strict symmetry of court production. The pile is short, which lets the silk lustre catch directional light and shift the apparent saturation as you move around the room.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted silk pile on cotton foundation at this size sells for six to eight lakh through Western dealers when it carries a workshop attribution. The Christie's and Sotheby's secondary market is firmer still. This piece is offered at a fraction of that against an MSRP that already reflects the comparable. Silk pile on a cotton ground retains its value because the inputs are scarce and the labour is unrepeatable. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a formal living room or a long dining setting. A red ground is rare and valuable in interior work because most floors default to neutral. The carpet pairs with cream walls, dark wood, brass detail, and either pale or saturated upholstery. It does not pair well with a competing red elsewhere in the room. Let it be the only red note.

Conservation

Rotate the piece a half turn at each change of season so that traffic and light age the silk evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off and suction only. Blot spills with a dry cotton cloth immediately. Schedule a professional silk hand-wash every five to seven years. Keep the rug out of direct prolonged sun if you want the saturation to hold for the next half-century.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
