Tribal weaving is built around a different logic than city weaving. There is no full-scale cartoon hung above the loom; the design is held in memory and re-improvised at each pass, which is why no two tribal carpets are precisely identical and why the lines hold the slight irregularity that gives them their honesty. The motifs in this rug are drawn from the bohemian register of nomadic and village weaving, where stylised guls, hooked diamonds, and meandering vines are arranged for visual rhythm rather than for symmetric perfection.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly six months on this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carpet. Wool was hand-spun in long staples, the dye lots were prepared in small quantities, and the knots were tied against a cotton foundation. The slight variations in dye uptake from one batch to the next produce the faint horizontal banding called abrash, which is the visual signature of village weaving and which a chemically uniform dye batch cannot reproduce.

The composition

A rust ground carrying medallions and tribal motifs in deeper madder, ivory, and indigo. The geometry is angular rather than curvilinear, the borders are layered with secondary guard bands, and the field is busy with secondary motifs in the spaces between the principal forms. The rust will warm over the years toward a softer terracotta, the indigo will deepen, and the ivory will move toward cream. The piece is meant to age into a richer version of itself.

The rust and indigo palette pairs with leather, with raw oak and walnut, with brass and copper, and with off-white plaster walls. The piece reads strongest as the organising element of a room rather than as a layered accent under heavier rugs.

Conservation

Rotate one half turn twice a year so traffic and light age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every six years. With this care the carpet runs eighty years.
