Ikat is the resist-dye technique that makes the warp threads carry the pattern before the rug is even woven. Translated into a hand-knotted carpet of recycled sari silk, the soft edges and shifting saturations of the original ikat survive into the finished pile. The result is a textile that reads as luminous and slightly imperfect at every angle.
Two-handed work for 4 months by 2 weavers seated together at the beam. Around 200 knots per square inch on a cotton foundation. Roughly 692,000 hand-tied knots in total. The fibre is recycled sari silk, hand-spun, and slightly uneven at the strand, which is what gives the rug its lived patina. The colour was drawn from a workshop palette held over decades, with each batch matched against the master cartoon before the loom was strung.
The composition
Colour reads as deep blue. Ikat geometry softened by the recycled silk fibre, every shape edged with the slight blur the technique is loved for. The colour will not stay still: a few seasons of light will warm the brighter passages and deepen the darker ones, which is the patina the rug is designed to acquire.
What you are buying
What sets a hand-knotted carpet apart from any other furnishing is that it is built to outlast its first owner and gain value while it does so. Comparable workshop weavings in this tradition trade at multiples of the price asked here when they appear at international auction with provenance.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) works under a coffee table with seating arranged around it, in a primary bedroom as a foot-of-the-bed runner, or as the anchor in a small reading area. The blue palette pairs with rattan, leather, linen upholstery, and wood flooring across the warm spectrum. The proportions also fit a child's bedroom or a smaller dressing area without crowding the floor plan. The rug expects to be looked at, not just walked on.
Conservation
Half-turn rotation each season to even out wear. Weekly vacuuming with the beater off, suction only. For spills, a clean dry cotton towel pressed into the pile, never scrubbed. A professional hand wash every five to six years. Under this regime the rug is a multi-generation object; it does not wear out, it gains patina.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
