Red is the patchwork colour that historic dealers fought hardest for. The original village rugs from which the fragments are drawn were almost always built around a red ground in the first place, so an overdye in red is a kind of homecoming for the fibres. The new wash deepens what was already there rather than overriding it, and the resulting field shifts between cinnabar and pomegranate depending on the angle of light. The rug is contemporary in technique and antique in temperament.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly four months on this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) piece. The constituent panels were drawn from older Anatolian wool, scoured to ground colour, then immersed in a low-temperature red bath agitated by hand to drive even pigment penetration. Once dyed and dried, the panels were joined by hand with cotton thread and reinforced from the back with a fresh foundation. A warm finish wash settles the colour and brings the wool to the soft burnish that defines older tribal weaving.

The composition

The drawings come through the red as deeper shadows rather than as colour. A central medallion in one fragment, a section of a stylised border guard in another, the angular geometry of a Caucasian gul somewhere in the corner. The longer you look the more emerges. Step back twelve feet and the field reads as a single deep red plane interrupted only by the structural rhythm of the seams. The wool itself adds a slight luminosity that flat carpet does not have.

What you are buying

Galleries in London, New York, and Berlin price comparable overdyed patchworks at $5,500 to $11,000 depending on size and provenance. This rug arrives at ₹94,399 from an MSRP of ₹3,77,300. Each example is finite because the source materials are. There is no production line behind a patchwork. There is only the wool that survives in older village rugs, and that wool is a depleting resource.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) takes a sofa and two armchair grouping cleanly, or anchors a six-seater dining table. The red ground reads sumptuous against bone walls, against ebonised oak, against polished brass. It works particularly well in north-facing rooms which run cool and benefit from the warm undertone. Pair with linen upholstery and dark wood for the most considered reading.

Conservation

Beater bars destroy hand-knotted wool. Use suction only when vacuuming, weekly. Blot spills with cotton without rubbing. Rotate the rug each March and September so traffic patterns stay even. Hand wash by a wool conservator every seven years or thereabouts to refresh the lanolin and saturate the dye back to depth. Avoid chemical spot cleaners outright.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
