Light-blue over-dye sits in a particular register inside the carpet world. It cools a classical field without bleaching it, and it preserves the pattern as a memory rather than erasing it. The technique came out of late-twentieth-century efforts to make Persian-style work that suited modern interiors, and the most accomplished readings have come from Indian houses that retained the slow knot-tying tradition while adopting contemporary finishing.
Two to three weavers spent close to five months on this loom in India tying knots one at a time on a cotton warp. The wool was hand-spun, dyed first in the traditional polychrome that the design called for, and the rug was washed and finished as a finished carpet before the over-dye step. A single immersion bath of light blue, held until the colour fully penetrated the pile, completed the transformation.
The composition
A unified field of cool light blue with a faint underlying floral pattern visible at oblique angles. The over-dye sits more saturated where the wool was densest and lighter where the pile was thinner, which produces a natural variation that prints and machine equivalents cannot replicate. The drawing that survived the bath behaves as soft tonal information rather than as graphic ornament. The piece reads quiet at room scale, intricate up close.
What you are buying
The over-dyed category was created to bring hand-knotted carpets into contemporary interior schemes without forcing the room to commit to a classical scheme. Comparable Indian work at 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) prices around three lakh through Western dealers; Rugsville sources directly. Hand-knotted construction means the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating and that any future buyer will recognise the underlying loom-time.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) suits a sitting area, a study around a large desk, or a primary bedroom where it covers the area between the bed and the foot of the room. Light blue carries well against pale plaster, against neutral linen upholstery, and against woods in the oak and ash families. The rug is a cooling element; balance the rest of the palette with at least one warmer note for visual ease.
Conservation
Rotate the rug 180 degrees every six months to keep light fade even across the surface. Vacuum once a week with suction only. Address spills immediately with cold water and a clean cotton cloth, blotting from the edge of the spill inward. Schedule a professional hand wash by a wool conservator every five years; the over-dye benefits from periodic reviving more than a polychrome rug does.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
