Grey is the colour interior architects ask for most and the colour the carpet world has the hardest time producing well. Most grey rugs read as flat, charcoal-printed surfaces with no internal variation; the over-dyed grey, by contrast, carries a hand-knotted pattern beneath the bath and shows it as a soft tonal trace running through the field. The result is a contemporary grey rug that has the depth of a classical carpet underneath.

Two to three weavers spent approximately five months at the loom in India before the rug entered the dyeing stage. The construction is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with hand-spun wool pile, traditional in every respect. After cutting, the rug was washed and dried, then lowered into a single immersion bath of grey dye and held until the bath fully penetrated the pile. A final shear and a slow sun-dry followed.

The composition

A unified grey field with the underlying floral drawing visible as a softer, faintly warmer trace. The grey itself ranges from deep slate in the densest passages to a paler ash where the original pile was thinner, which is the variation that mass-produced rugs cannot fake. Borders dissolve into the field as part of the over-dye logic. From a standing height the rug behaves as a textured grey ground; on approach it reveals its hand-knotted past.

Conservation

Plan a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years; for over-dyed work this washing is particularly important, as it lifts deep dust that vacuuming cannot reach and refreshes the depth of the bath colour.
