The overdyed patchwork is one of the most quietly radical ideas to come out of the late-century rug trade. A worn village carpet that would otherwise have ended its life was cut, washed, and reborn under a single saturated colour, the original drawing surviving as a ghost beneath a contemporary palette. This purple version pulls the patchwork toward a register that historic rugs almost never reached, a deep aubergine wash that turns the underlying medallions, mihrabs, and carnations into a unified field of plum, raisin, and warm violet.
Two to three artisans worked the rug over roughly four months. The constituent fragments were drawn from older Anatolian wool, hand-trimmed to a uniform pile, washed clean of their original surface dyes, then immersed in a single purple bath at low temperature so the wool absorbed pigment slowly and evenly. After dyeing the panels were assembled by hand, joined with cotton thread, backed with fresh foundation cloth, and finished with a soft warm wash that settles the wool and locks the colour.
The composition
The new bath sits as a transparent veil over the older drawings. Look closely and you see the original geometry asserting itself. Step back and the eye registers only a saturated purple field with the structural rhythm of the patchwork seams. The shifts of tone from one panel to the next come from the original fibres themselves, which absorbed the new dye at different rates depending on how they had been dyed and worn.
What you are buying
Dealers in London, Paris, and New York routinely list comparable overdyed patchworks between $5,000 and $10,000. This rug arrives at ₹94,399 on the basis of a clearance-tier position against an MSRP of ₹3,77,300. Each piece is unrepeatable because each draws on a different set of antique fragments. The making is finite. The supply of usable old wool is finite.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) is the canonical anchor scale for a primary living room or formal dining floor. The purple ground sits beautifully against limewashed walls, against deep walnut joinery, against burnished brass and antique gold. It pairs with mid-century low seating and reads as a serious accent under heavier classical furniture.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year so wear and ambient light age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction-only mode. Blot spills immediately with cotton, never rub or scrub. A trained conservator should hand wash the rug every six to eight years to restore lustre to the wool. Properly cared for the patchwork carries forward as a single object across multiple decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
