A red overdyed patchwork is the closest a contemporary rug can come to the look of a classic antique drawing-room carpet without spending the money the antique would cost. Older village rugs from the wool belt of eastern Turkey and the southern Caucasus already sat on red grounds in their first life. The overdye revisits that ground with a fresh saturation and unifies the disparate fragments into a single deep red field. The technique was popularised by a generation of European designers in the early 2000s and has held its position since.

Three weavers worked across roughly four months on this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) piece. The source fragments were trimmed to a uniform pile, scoured of their original surface colour, then immersed in a regulated red bath at moderate temperature to drive even pigment uptake. The panels were assembled by hand with cotton thread, supported with a fresh cotton foundation behind the rug, and finally warm-washed to soften the wool and bring up the red to its final depth.

The composition

From any working distance the rug reads as a single deep red field carved into a soft grid by the structural seams. Approach the rug and the original drawings start to come forward. A central medallion fragment, sections of stepped border guard, a stylised botanical scroll, occasional Caucasian guls. The tonal variation between panels comes from the wool itself, which absorbed the new red bath at different rates because the underlying fibres were of different ages and histories.

What you are buying

Western dealers list comparable red patchworks between $5,500 and $11,000 depending on size and provenance. This rug arrives at ₹94,399 against a list of ₹3,77,300. The piece is unrepeatable because the constituent fragments are unrepeatable. The wool itself, drawn from older village rugs, is in finite and shrinking supply. Hand-knotted wool of this character appreciates with use rather than depreciating like a manufactured product.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) takes a primary sofa and two-armchair living group cleanly, or anchors a six-seater dining floor. Red is the most theatrical colour in the patchwork repertoire. It works in rooms that have other historic elements such as antique walnut, brass, leather. It works equally in pared-back contemporary rooms because the depth of the colour holds against minimalist architecture and gives the room an emotional centre.

Conservation

Suction-only vacuuming once a week. Beater bars are too aggressive for the seams between fragments. Rotate the rug a half turn every six months so wear and ambient light age the surface evenly. Blot spills with white cotton without rubbing. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the rug every seven years. Avoid all chemical spot-cleaning sprays which strip pigment unevenly across the patchwork.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
