A patchwork rug is a second life. The original carpet, woven somewhere in the wool belt that runs from western Anatolia to the southern Caucasus, was used flat on a floor for thirty or fifty years and walked on, sat on, prayed on, eaten over. When it could not be used as a single object any longer the better sections were rescued, washed, and folded back into a contemporary composition. This particular purple iteration is one of the warmer reads in the patchwork tradition, sitting between mulberry and oxblood depending on the light.
Three weavers worked across approximately four months on the assembly and reknotting of stress points. The base fragments were trimmed, scoured to remove old surface colour, then immersed in a controlled purple bath that was heated and circulated to drive even pigment uptake across wool of different ages. The patches were then joined by hand with cotton thread, supported with a new foundation, and finally lustred in a warm-water wash that softens the hand and brings up the depth of the dye.
The composition
From above the rug reads as a single saturated field. From any closer the original drawings come forward as a kind of palimpsest. Tribal medallions, stylised vines, fragments of border guard run together in slow-shifting tones because each underlying fibre absorbed the new dye to its own degree. The wash settles into the wool over the first year of use and the surface starts to acquire the soft burnish that defines old tribal weaving.
What you are buying
Equivalent overdyed patchworks at Western galleries trade in the $5,000 to $10,000 band, with bespoke versions running higher. The clearance position against an MSRP of ₹3,77,300 brings this rug to ₹94,399. Because the source materials are all distinct, the rug cannot be reproduced. The supply of suitable old village wool is limited and shrinking. A patchwork acquired now is a hedge on that scarcity.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) anchors a sofa, two armchairs, and a coffee table without crowding, or sits comfortably under a six-seater dining table. The purple field carries warmth into pale rooms and grounds saturated rooms in older architecture. It reads as serious under brass, antique walnut, ebonised oak, and limestone.
Conservation
Suction-only vacuuming weekly. Never a beater bar against this kind of pile. Rotate once or twice a year so traffic and natural light age the surface uniformly. Spills should be blotted with cotton, never rubbed. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the rug every seven years or so to restore the underlying lanolin and tone.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
