Kashan as a design tradition came out of central Persia where the wool was finer, the knot was tighter, and the colour palette favoured deep madder red against indigo blue and ivory. The classical Kashan medallion sits inside a field of dense floral tracery, with the four spandrel quarters at the corners completing a pattern that reads as a single composition. Rust and black is the more restrained reading of that vocabulary, where the principal red is pulled toward terracotta and the deep accent leans charcoal rather than ink-blue.
Three to four weavers shared the vertical loom for around six months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. The dye plants were madder root for the rust, indigo and oak gall layered for the deep black, walnut hull for the warm tan, and pomegranate for the cream. Each colour matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash that mellowed the colour into antique register.
The composition
A rust ground holding a stepped black medallion at the centre and four spandrel quarters at the corners. The field between is worked in dense floral tracery, vine and palmette and rosette, drawn in cream and walnut and faint indigo. The border is a triple band, the principal one in black with a stylised vine repeat. The rust will lighten by a half shade over the first decade and the black will lift toward charcoal, the slow exchange that vegetable-dyed Kashans were always built to perform.
What you are buying
Antique Kashan carpets at this scale and palette carry estimates of thirty to sixty-five thousand US dollars at international auction when condition matches. This rug shares the loom architecture, the Persian knot, the long-staple wool, and the plant-dye discipline of those antiques. At one and a half lac it sits at a fraction of the auction comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room. The rust ground holds against chalk plaster and warms walnut casework. The medallion centres a room without dictating the seating layout. Pairs with brass detail, oxblood leather, raw linen, and a single large work above the sofa.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece runs nine decades in regular use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
