The overdye process was developed in the early 2000s by Anatolian and Indian workshops as a way to bring older village wool carpets back into a contemporary register. An existing carpet, woven in the last hundred years and sometimes worn at the pile, is sheared even, washed clean, and immersed in a single saturated dye bath that pulls the entire field into one strong colour while the original drawing reads through as a tonal shadow. Teal blue is the cooler register of that vocabulary.
Three to four weavers wove the original base carpet on a vertical loom over five to six months. The pile was hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, tied in Persian asymmetric knots. The overdye process took a further three weeks at a specialist Indian workshop, where the rug was sheared down to a uniform pile height, washed in mineral solution, immersed in an indigo-and-weld bath calibrated to read as deep teal, and sun-dried for several days before the final brushing. The original drawing reads as a slightly darker ghost beneath the saturated teal.
The composition
A saturated teal blue field with the underlying older Persian floral drawing reading through as a tonal shadow rather than as a discrete pattern. The teal is not flat. It carries variation from the underlying base carpet's colour, with deeper passages where the original ground was rust or madder and lighter passages where it was cream. The border survives as a shadow of itself, the geometry visible but the contrast collapsed into the single overdye field.
What you are buying
Overdyed antique-base carpets at this scale reach fifteen to forty thousand US dollars at the specialist Western dealers when the base carpet quality is comparable. This is a new overdye on a hand-knotted base carpet of the same character, with the same dye discipline. At one and a half lac it sits well below the dealer comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room. The saturated teal pairs particularly well with modern interiors that want a hand-knotted carpet without the historical visual weight of a traced classical field. Pairs with chalk walls, washed oak, brushed brass, raw linen, and modern art in saturated colour.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Overdyed pieces benefit from a professional clean every four years rather than the standard six, because the high-saturation dye lifts marginally with successive cleans. With this care the rug crosses six decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
