The Mahal pattern is the open-field cousin of the dense Sultanabad. Where Sultanabad weavers crowded vine and palmette into the centre of the rug, Mahal workshops in central Persia opened the field and let the floral motif breathe across an unbroken ground. The Mahal carpet was the rug that defined Edwardian drawing rooms in London and New York between 1900 and 1925, and its descendants are still woven on Indian looms today by workshops who learned the pattern from grandfathers.
Three weavers worked the loom for around five months. New Zealand wool was hand-spun on the village wheel, then washed and conditioned before entering the dye vats. Vegetable dyes from madder root, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull were each matured for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The Persian asymmetric knot is tied against a cotton foundation. The total knot count across the field works out to roughly 2.5 million.
The composition
An ivory ground carries scattered floral sprays in faded coral, soft indigo, and walnut, drawn loose enough to read as a meadow rather than a tiled pattern. The border is a single restrained running vine in indigo. The wool will warm into bone over the first decade, the corals will soften into salmon, and the indigo will deepen rather than fade. The rug carries the abrash banding that hand-dyed wool always produces, and that banding is the visible record of the weaver's day.
What you are buying
Antique Mahal carpets of comparable scale and palette move through Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell in the range of $12,000 to $30,000 when condition is auction-grade. This piece is woven in the same idiom, on the same loom geometry, to the same density, in the same fibre. The vegetable-dyed Mahal appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property collectors pay for at the upper end of the market.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale, large enough to sit a full seating group on, a ten-seat dining table over, or a king bed across. The ivory ground keeps the room light; the floral palette adds layered colour without committing to a period interior. Pair with walnut or oak floors, linen upholstery, walls in chalk or warm grey, and unlacquered brass fixtures.
Conservation
Rotate the rug each season for even light and footfall ageing. Vacuum weekly on suction with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with cool water and a clean cotton cloth. Plan a hand wash by a wool-trained specialist every five years. With this regimen the rug runs ninety years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
