Beige is the hardest ground colour to weave well. Pure cream reads as cold under interior light and a true tan can muddy a pattern, so most workshops settle on a cooked-grain shade somewhere between the two. Sari silk hits that note naturally because the recycled fibre is rarely a single value. The dye baths of the original handloom saris carried wheat, rope, oat, and putty, and when the cuttings are hand-spun back into yarn the resulting beige is layered rather than flat.
This 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) piece took a team of three weavers about six months on a vertical loom. The drawing is the tribal Eros composition, an ikat-influenced pattern resolved through hand-tied knots rather than resist dyeing. Cotton warps were tensioned and the sari silk pile was clipped low so that the geometry reads as line work rather than as fluffy texture. Each row was tied by hand and combed down with a metal beater.
The composition
A warm beige field carries tribal medallions and lozenges in soft cinnamon, charcoal, and faded rose. The pattern hangs in horizontal bands so the eye travels the length of the rug rather than landing on a single centre. Sari silk's natural heather means that no two beige knots match exactly, which gives the ground a depth that flat-dyed silk cannot reach. Direct light pulls the gold tones forward, side light deepens the rose.
What you are buying
A hand-knotted silk-pile carpet at 9' x 12' is a serious acquisition. Equivalent pieces with workshop provenance and condition reports trade through Western auction houses in the four to seven lakh range when they appear at all. The MSRP of this rug reflects that comparable. The price asked sits well below it. Sari silk on cotton is a finite material because the upstream sari trade is finite, and a hand-knotted piece holds value for the same reason an antique does.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is large enough to define a primary living room or a formal dining area. Beige is the most flexible ground colour for an interior already crowded with other materials. The piece sits with light oak, cream linen, brushed brass, and any palette of art that depends on quiet flooring. It also flatters dark walnut and stone.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn to balance light exposure. Blot any spill with a clean dry cotton cloth and never rub at silk pile. Have the rug professionally hand-washed by a silk-trained conservator every five years. Stored well between uses, the piece outlasts its first owners by several decades.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
