The Persian floral cartoon is the oldest design vocabulary in carpet making, and it earned its place by allowing the weaver to use every tool in the studio. Curving vines, palmettes, lotus rosettes, and arabesques that fold into and out of one another. A black ground is the rarest version because it asks the most of the cartoon. The drawing has nowhere to hide. Every line has to register against deep black, and the hand of the weaver is visible in every curve. This piece carries the floral language forward into a contemporary domestic scale.
Three weavers worked the loom for six months. The pile is wool blended with mulberry silk, the silk reserved for the lotus crowns and the inner vine where it lifts the line off the black ground and gives the floral the depth that makes a Persian carpet read as drawing rather than as ornament. Knots are Persian asymmetric, tied row by row against the beam at a density that supports the fineness of the cartoon.
The composition
A deep black ground. Curving vine in pomegranate, faded ochre, soft sage, and ivory, with the silk highlights concentrated on the lotus heads and the palmette crowns. The border is restrained, a single guard band of palmette and rosette in the same vocabulary so the eye reads the field as a continuous garden rather than a framed pattern. The black will warm slightly over the years as the wool relaxes and the silk burnishes.
What you are buying
Contemporary hand-knotted Persian floral carpets at 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) in wool and silk on a black ground sit at $9,000 to $18,000 in the New York and London trade. This is a workshop weaving to the same construction, the same fibre choice, and the same drawing standard, sold direct. The rug appreciates with use as the silk passes from raw lustre into its mature burnish, which takes about a decade.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical living room and dining scale. The black ground anchors a bright space without darkening it, the way a black piano grounds a music room without absorbing the light. Mid-tone walls in clay, plaster, or warm grey hold the saturation. Pairs well with brass, walnut, leather in oxblood or cognac, and any single strong work of figurative art.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn. Suction-only vacuuming weekly, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with clean cotton, never rub the silk passages. Specialist hand wash every five to seven years preserves the silk lustre and the integrity of the wool. The piece serves seventy to a hundred years on that routine.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
