Three weavers held the loom across six months of knotting. The pile is a wool and silk blend, the silk used to lift the floral motifs above the ivory ground so the lotus heads and the palmette crowns catch light from above. The ivory is undyed New Zealand wool, which is what allows the ground to warm slowly toward bone over the years rather than greying as a dyed white would. The deep black border is double-dyed in successive baths to reach a saturation that holds against the ivory without bleeding visually into the field.

The composition

An ivory ground with curving vine work in soft rust, indigo, faded ochre, and silk-lifted bone. The black border is wide and unfussed, framing the field cleanly without competing with the drawing inside it. The silk concentrations are read first, then the wool drawing settles in behind. Over the years the ivory will warm to bone and the black will relax slightly toward charcoal as the wool oxidises. A black-on-ivory floral becomes more itself with use.
