The loom held two weavers across roughly four months. Pile is wool blended with mulberry silk, with the silk reserved for the lotus crowns and the inner vine work where it lifts the line off the ivory and red grounds. Wool was kettle-dyed across successive baths to reach the depth of red the cartoon required and the warm bone of the ivory passages. Persian asymmetric knots were tied row by row against the loom beam at a density that supports the curving floral drawing.

The composition

A red ground across the field, with ivory passages holding the larger floral medallions and the cornerspandrels. Curving vine drawn in soft ochre, indigo, faded green, and silk-lifted bone runs across both grounds. The border is a single guard band of palmette and rosette in indigo and ivory. Across the years the red will lighten toward warm crimson, the ivory will warm to bone, and the silk will burnish into a deeper lustre.
