A floral cartoon on a tan and ivory ground asks the eye to read the drawing as garden and the ground as light. The Persian tradition of the open-field floral grew out of the seventeenth-century court workshops at Isfahan and Kerman, where the weavers were instructed to leave the cartoon legible rather than packed, so the design language could be appreciated as drawing rather than as accumulated incident. This piece carries that open-field discipline into a modern domestic scale, with the warm ground throwing every curve of vine and lotus forward.

Three weavers shared the loom for six months. The pile blends New Zealand wool with mulberry silk, the silk used to lift the floral motifs above the matte wool ground so the drawing catches light from above and reads cleanly even at evening light levels. Tan and ivory wool was kettle-dyed in close registration so the ground reads as one tonally modulated field rather than two separate colour blocks. Knots are Persian asymmetric tied by feel against the loom beam.

The composition

A warm tan field that lightens through the centre toward bone ivory, with curving vine work in soft rust, indigo, faded ochre, and silver. The silk catches on the lotus crowns and the palmette tops and shifts as you cross the room. The border carries the same vine vocabulary in a single guard band so the field reads as a continuous garden seen through one window rather than as a framed picture. Tan grounds settle into themselves over the first decade as the wool oxidises and warms.

What you are buying

A 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) Persian-tradition floral in wool and silk with a workshop-level cartoon and three weaver-months of labour reaches $10,000 to $20,000 in the New York and Mayfair trade by the time gallery margin is added. The piece you are looking at is the same construction, the same fibre, and the same cartoon discipline, priced at the workshop margin direct from India. A wool and silk floral appreciates with use as the silk burnishes through the first decade.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the dining and primary lounge scale. The tan and ivory palette pairs well with chalk, oat, or warm white walls, and with rooms that already carry pale linen or natural-fibre upholstery. The rug holds light beautifully under a tall window. Pairs with oak, walnut, brass, and any single antique piece used as a focal element.

Conservation

Half-turn the carpet twice a year so light and traffic age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off, suction only. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, no rubbing, particularly on the silk highlights. Specialist wool hand wash every five to seven years preserves the silk and removes the embedded dust that breaks down wool fibre. With that care the rug runs seventy to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
