Silver-green and ivory is one of the more demanding palettes in the Ziegler vocabulary because it asks the wool to carry a soft, almost smoky cool tone alongside a warm cream without either dominating. Get it right and the carpet reads like an aged tapestry-weight textile under glass; get it wrong and the silver-green flattens into nothing. The weavers behind this piece spent a long apprenticeship with the dye formula before approaching the loom.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months to produce this 8' x 10' piece in India. The pile is hand-spun wool, plied for tensile strength, dyed in small batches so the silver-green carries gentle tonal abrash across the field. The cartoon was drawn from period Ziegler studies; the cartoon is what holds the open, airy field that distinguishes a Ziegler from a denser late-Persian original.

The composition

An ivory field with a softly drawn central medallion in silver-green and faded rose, vine work running corner to corner. The silver-green is built from indigo overdyed with a weak yellow plant bath, the only way to reach that cool warm middle without dulling the surrounding ivory. The border is a single restrained guard band drawn in the same green. Over the next decade the green will lighten by perhaps a quarter tone and the ivory will warm into the colour of unbleached linen.

What you are buying

Period Ziegler carpets in cool palettes are scarcer than the warm-ground equivalents and command premiums at international auction in the forty to seventy thousand US dollar range. This is a new weaving in the same drawing tradition, on the same loom geometry, in comparably prepared wool and dye. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the underlying argument for buying hand-knotted at all.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sets a primary living room or a generous formal dining configuration. The silver-green ground reads especially well against putty and warm grey walls, and pairs cleanly with walnut and oak floors, brass and aged steel hardware, leather upholstery, and unbleached linen. The cool tone settles a warm room rather than competing with it.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every six months so light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years. Cool-toned vegetable dyes hold particularly well in indirect daylight; treated carefully, the rug runs eighty years and gains a quiet patina across decades.
