Agra carpets earned their reputation in the courts of the late Mughals for fineness of knotting and a quiet elegance of drawing. The tradition migrated to the village loom and survives in pieces like this one, hand-knotted in India.

Two weavers sat at the loom across around four months of continuous work. Wool hand-spun in small lots, dyed in copper vats, then knotted against a cotton warp by feel rather than count. The back of the rug carries the drawing as clearly as the face does, which is the structural test of a carpet woven properly through every row.

The composition

A composition built around a Agra pattern. The beige and green ground holds the field together; the secondary tones do the figuration. The colour will not stay still over the next decade. Saturations will soften, the deeper tones will warm, and the rug will arrive at a quieter register than it begins with. That movement is the point.
