Green is the hardest plant dye to hold to a carpet. Indigo and pomegranate combined produce a green that the wool wants to drift away from over years, which is why true green grounds are scarce in the antique trade and command a premium when they appear. The Ziegler workshops solved the problem by over-dyeing in two slow baths rather than one fast one, and the carpet in front of you was finished against that same protocol.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five and a half months. The wool was hand-spun and the knots tied at moderate density on a cotton warp. The dye work was done in small lots, with the green built up in two passes over an indigo undercoat, then matured in copper vats for a fortnight before the wool was lowered to the loom. The beige tones in the lattice were drawn from walnut hull and pomegranate skin, with madder root tinting the rose accents in the floral repeats.
The composition
A soft green ground with a beige floral lattice carried at moderate scale, framed by a single restrained border. The green is not stable in a single direction. Read in morning light it pulls toward sage; in evening light it warms toward olive. That tonal shift is what an over-dyed plant green does and what a synthetic green never replicates. Over five years the green will deepen by a half-tone and the beige lattice will warm to a closer match.
What you are buying
Vegetable-dyed Zieglers on a true green field of this scale sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of four to seven lakh and rarely below. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, the rug is a working bargain on a colour that the antique trade considers genuinely scarce. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating and the rarity of the green ground compounds the appreciation.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. A green field reads cooler than rust or beige and pairs cleanly with walnut, brass, washed linen, and white-painted brick. Lighter walls push the green forward as a focal field; deeper walls let it settle into the architecture. A six-seater table or a primary sofa sits comfortably within the borders.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the green ages evenly under window light. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth immediately. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years and ask specifically for cool-water rinsing, which protects the indigo undercoat. Properly maintained the carpet runs ninety years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
