A beige Ziegler is a different proposition from an ivory one. Where ivory wants to be the brightest thing in the room, beige asks to be a setting, a long warm ground that lets the architecture and the furniture register against it without insisting on attention. The Ziegler weavers worked the design specifically for the kind of mid-Victorian room that wanted permanence over display, and the carpet in front of you reads in that same register.
Three weavers shared the loom for around five months. The wool was hand-spun and the knots tied at moderate density on a cotton warp, with a slow wash drawing the colour down into the kind of soft, settled tone the design was always woven for. Dyes were drawn from walnut hull for the beige ground, madder root for the warm rose tonics in the lattice, oak gall for the deeper browns, and a small batch of indigo for the linear accents. The wool was sun-dried over a fortnight after the wash so the fibres relaxed at their final length.
The composition
A long beige field carrying a quiet floral lattice in walnut, soft rose, and faded sage, contained by a slim border that ends without elaboration. The beige is not a single tone. There are at least three values of it across the field because the wool was dyed in small lots and the lots were rotated through the weave deliberately, which is why the rug reads as a piece of cloth rather than a printed surface. The colour will warm a half-tone over the next decade and pull closer to the pale honey of an antique.
What you are buying
Ziegler-tradition carpets of this density and palette sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of four to seven lakh, and the late nineteenth-century originals at significantly higher figures when condition permits. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, this is a piece woven to the same specification as the antiques in the same hand-spun wool. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is not a property the rest of your floor furnishings share.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living area or a dining room with a six-to-eight-seater table. A beige field carries the room rather than competing with it, which is the reason the design has survived a hundred and forty years of changing taste. Pairs with walnut, oak, brass, washed linen, and lime-plaster walls. Sits poorly against strongly patterned upholstery.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth immediately, working from the edge inward. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Properly maintained the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and develops the soft honey patina that defines the antique register.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
