Description / Leidel LEID-1 Wool Handmade Carpet
Studio carpet design in the second half of the twentieth century pulled from the abstraction of European and American painting and put it back through the loom. This piece is a direct descendant of that mid-century studio conversation.
This rug was hand-tufted in India over roughly 5 weeks by a team of two tufters and a single finisher. Wool was loaded into the tufting gun one colour at a time and pushed through a stretched canvas in long passes that follow the cartoon transferred to the back of the frame. Latex and scrim were applied at the end to lock every loop in place. The carving step took a finisher about a week with hand shears, cutting the pattern into a low relief that pulls a millimetre or two of shadow into every motif edge. The piece behaves differently in lamp light than in north light.
The composition
The neutral field works as a quiet ground for a pattern that reveals itself on approach. Furniture sits on the rug without competing for attention. The colour is built up from two passes of dye on the same wool rather than a single dipped bath, which is why the saturation reads as depth rather than as flat surface.
The piece in a room
size as listed anchors a primary bedroom, a medium living room, or a sitting area in a larger flat. The neutral pairs cleanly with walnut, oak, teak, and warm stone floors and answers both white and mid-tone walls. Position the front legs of seating onto the field and leave a frame of bare floor around the perimeter so the rug reads as a defined object rather than as wall-to-wall coverage.
Care
Vacuum once a week, suction only, no rotating brush. Blot any spill with a dry cloth and follow with a barely damp cloth if needed. The first month or two will produce some loose fibre from the freshly cut pile, which is expected and stops on its own. A specialist dry clean every three to four years keeps the surface fresh and lifts the dust the household vacuum cannot reach.

Auspicious Placement
Vastu Guidance
Traditional Vastu Shastra recommendations for placing this carpet in your home. Choose based on the room and the corner you wish to ground.
Recommended direction: South-west (stability), or under the seating in the West / North-west.
Earth-tone carpets (red, ochre, terracotta, brown) in the South-west bring stability and grounding energy. Avoid covering the central Brahmasthan (centre) of the room; leave a small bare floor space.
Recommended direction: South-west or West side of the bed.
Soft pastels (cream, dusty rose, sage, blue-grey) work well in bedrooms for restful energy. Avoid bright reds at the head of the bed. Place the carpet so it extends 18–24 inches on each side of the bed.
Recommended direction: West or North-west zone.
Place carpet under the dining table such that all chairs sit on it when pulled out. Earth tones (terracotta, ochre, beige) and floral patterns are auspicious. Avoid black or dark blue under the dining area per Vastu.
Recommended direction: North-east corner of the home or the pooja room itself.
Auspicious colours: maroon, deep red, saffron, ivory, gold-yellow. Wool naturally resists fire risk near diya lamps. Use a small 2'×3' or 3'×5' size — larger carpets are not traditional in pooja spaces. Sit facing East or North while praying.
Recommended direction: Just inside the main door (East or North-facing entrance is ideal).
A small 3'×5' carpet at the entrance brings welcoming energy. Choose warm tones (red, ochre, gold). The carpet should be in good condition — frayed or stained welcome mats are considered inauspicious.
Vastu guidance is traditional and may vary by region and family practice. Consult a Vastu expert for personalised advice.
