Studio carpet design in the second half of the twentieth century pulled from the abstraction of European and American painting and put it back through the loom. This piece is a direct descendant of that mid-century studio conversation.

The piece took roughly 3 weeks at a single bench, two tufters carrying the field and a third hand finishing. The tufting gun pushed wool through a stretched cotton primary canvas in one continuous run for each colour. After the field was finished the back was sealed with natural latex and bonded to a cotton scrim, locking the loops in for the working life of the carpet. The final pass was a hand-shear by a single finisher, the pile carved down to relieve the figure above the field by two to three millimetres so the pattern reads at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. The shear marks are visible on close inspection and are the signature of hand finishing.

The composition

The neutral field works as a quiet ground for a pattern that reveals itself on approach. Furniture sits on the rug without competing for attention. The colour is built up from two passes of dye on the same wool rather than a single dipped bath, which is why the saturation reads as depth rather than as flat surface.

The piece in a room

3' × 5' (91 × 152 cm) sits under the front legs of a three-seater sofa with the coffee table fully on the rug, or fully under a queen bed turned across the long axis. The neutral answers both painted and panelled walls. Pairs particularly well with low mid-century furniture and with the cleaner profile of contemporary modular seating.

Care

Suction-only vacuuming weekly. Beater bars pull at the tufted base and shorten the working life of the rug. Blot spills immediately with clean cotton, never with paper towel which leaves fibre behind. Expect six weeks of light shedding from new as the loose ends of the cut pile work themselves clear. A professional dry clean every three years keeps the surface from compacting.
