Workshop weaving of this scale and density survives because the visual logic was right from the start. A central composition. A disciplined border. A palette that ages rather than fades. The descendants of those workshops continue to weave in the same vocabulary, on the same kind of vertical loom, for the same reason the pattern survives.
A single weaver carried the loom for 3 months on this piece. Approximately 313,200 hand-tied knots at around 145 per square inch on a cotton foundation. Hand-spun wool dyed in small lots from madder, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each batch matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool was lowered.
The composition
The drawing is angular and confident. The red grounds the composition; the ivory works as relief above it. Each batch of wool was dyed separately, which gives the field a faint abrash that registers only at distance. A vegetable-dyed wool rug does not arrive complete; it arrives ready to settle.
What you are buying
Antique Heriz and Serapi pieces with comparable drawing and condition trade at international auction in the range of $15,000 to $40,000. New weaving in the same tradition, to the same density, on a cotton foundation, exists for a fraction of that number because the production economy is intact. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
At 3' × 5' (91 × 152 cm) the rug serves as an entry mat, a bedside accent, or a sample of the weave under a small console. The red reads at close range, where the latch-hook detail registers as drawing rather than as graphic.
Conservation
Conservation rather than maintenance is the right frame for this piece. Rotate a half turn twice a year. Vacuum with suction only. Treat spills by blotting, not rubbing. Hand-wash every five to seven years by a conservator. Direct sunlight is a friend, not an enemy, to vegetable dye.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
