The graphic language of this rug sits in the long tradition of village and tribal weaving across the Asian belt that runs from the Balkans through the Caucasus and into northwest India. The neutral reading edits the source for a contemporary interior.

Two tufters and a finisher worked the piece over 3 weeks, the design transferred to canvas first as a full-scale cartoon and then worked through the surface row by row. The tufting gun pushed wool through a stretched cotton primary canvas in one continuous run for each colour. After the field was finished the back was sealed with natural latex and bonded to a cotton scrim, locking the loops in for the working life of the carpet. The final pass was a hand-shear by a single finisher, the pile carved down to relieve the figure above the field by two to three millimetres so the pattern reads at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. The shear marks are visible on close inspection and are the signature of hand finishing.

The composition

A saturated neutral field with figure work in tonal contrast, the kind of pairing that holds a room together without dominating it. The wool catches light along the cut pile and absorbs it across the carved relief, so the surface reads as two different materials depending on the angle.

3' × 5' (91 × 152 cm) sits under the front legs of a three-seater sofa with the coffee table fully on the rug, or fully under a queen bed turned across the long axis. The neutral answers both painted and panelled walls. Pairs particularly well with low mid-century furniture and with the cleaner profile of contemporary modular seating.

Care

Weekly vacuuming with suction only. Spot clean with cool water and a white cloth; do not use detergents that contain optical brighteners on wool. The pile sheds for roughly six weeks from new, then settles. Schedule a professional clean every three years to extend the working life of the latex bond.
