Floor weaving on the Indian subcontinent has supplied the carpet trade for more than a century, the workshops trained on the same Persian and Turkish vocabularies that defined the form before they did. The neutral register in this piece sits within that long conversation.

The piece took roughly 3 weeks at a single bench, two tufters carrying the field and a third hand finishing. Wool was loaded into the tufting gun one colour at a time and pushed through a stretched canvas in long passes that follow the cartoon transferred to the back of the frame. Latex and scrim were applied at the end to lock every loop in place. After the latex set, a finisher worked the surface with long shears for the better part of a week, lifting and trimming the pattern field by hand to give the design the depth the loom does not produce on its own. The relief catches the slow rake of evening light.

The composition

A field of neutral broken by lighter and darker registers in the same family. The hand-tufted surface gives the colour a subtle directional quality; viewed from one end of the rug it reads a half tone warmer than from the other end. This is a property of how cut pile reflects light, not a flaw of the dye.

The piece in a room

At 3' × 5' (91 × 152 cm) the rug holds the central area of a living room or a primary bedroom. The neutral has enough weight to anchor a seating arrangement without flattening the rest of the palette. Position so the rug extends at least eighteen inches beyond the seating on three sides; the eye reads the negative-space frame as part of the composition.

Care

Suction-only vacuuming weekly. Beater bars pull at the tufted base and shorten the working life of the rug. Blot spills immediately with clean cotton, never with paper towel which leaves fibre behind. Expect six weeks of light shedding from new as the loose ends of the cut pile work themselves clear. A professional dry clean every three years keeps the surface from compacting.
