After the patchwork was joined and reinforced, the rug went through an antique wash, was sheared close, and then immersed in a hand-mixed charcoal dye bath in copper vessels for several hours.

The composition

The patchwork grid is irregular; the charcoal over-dye unifies the field into a single warm dark grey at viewing distance, with the underlying panel boundaries and tonal variations visible on approach. The dye reads more as a soft black than as a hard graphite; the wool's lustre softens the saturation slightly. Over the first decade the charcoal will warm into a deeper iron-grey under the wool's lustre, gaining patina rather than fading.
