Two tufters worked the design over about two weeks, with a finisher cutting and trimming the surface by hand at the end. The wool is pushed through canvas row by row from the back of the work, then sheared from the front to set the pile depth. The scrim and latex on the underside hold the structure.

The composition

Three values of ivory layered against the floral structure. The interplay gives the surface its movement. There is no single focal point. The eye crosses the field rather than landing in one place, which is how a rug at this size lives in a room without dominating it. The composition was drawn so the secondary motifs read as supporting rhythm rather than as separate events.

The piece in a room

At 3' x 5' (91 × 152 cm), the rug works at a doorway, beside a bed as a step-out, in a reading nook beside a single chair, or under a small altar in a prayer space. The ivory register sits comfortably with stone, terrazzo, and warm hardwood. At this scale the rug behaves as a placed object rather than as flooring; treat it the way you would a small painting on the floor, with sight lines that frame it from at least one defined viewing position. The piece also works layered over a larger neutral as a graphic accent.

Care

Suction vacuum weekly. Blot spills with cool water and a clean cloth. Light shedding settles inside two months and does not affect the body of the rug. A professional dry clean every two to three years keeps the wool fresh and the latex backing sound. Use an underlay sized to the rug to prevent slipping and to extend the life of the backing.
