Purple was the most expensive dye in the ancient world. Tyrian purple required ten thousand sea snails for a single gram of pigment and was reserved by Roman edict for the imperial household. Vegetal substitutes from logwood and madder layered with indigo only became reliable in the nineteenth century, and even then a deep purple ground in a hand-knotted carpet remained the kind of statement that signalled a serious commission. The piece in front of you draws on that older association between purple and considered patronage.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for around five months. Hand-spun wool combined with silk highlight yarn, knotted against a cotton warp at the density needed to render the tonal depth purple demands. The colour is built from a base bath of madder, an over-dye of indigo, and silk highlights that catch reflected light and lift the field forward.
The composition
A field of deep aubergine purple with a quieter central reserve and a single guard border at the perimeter. Silk highlight yarn carries a slow arabesque that picks up reflected light and pulls a faint rose shift across the surface at certain angles. From one end of the room the rug reads as a near-black ground; from the other it reveals as a luminous purple. The composition is built around restraint. Pattern is held back so the colour can do the speaking.
What you are buying
Comparable wool and silk purple-ground transitional carpets sell through Western dealers between eighteen and thirty-five thousand dollars. This is a new weaving in the same drawing language, on the same loom, at the same density, made in India. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The silk highlights bloom further as the wool wears slightly to reveal them.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a formal sitting room, or a six-seat dining arrangement. Purple this saturated suits restrained surroundings. Pale plaster walls, oak, brass, and clean white linen let the rug behave as the room's single colour statement. Strong overhead light flattens the silk; lamp light at the perimeter brings it forward at night.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum twice a week, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth from the outside of the mark inward, never rub. Hand wash by a wool and silk trained conservator every five years. Cared for this way the rug lasts seventy years and longer.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
