Tibetan weaving uses a knot found nowhere else, looped around a metal rod and cut in a single pass so the pile rises in even ribs across the loom. The technique gives the weaver freedom to mix wool and silk in the same row, raising the silk a fraction above the wool so that the design appears in two planes of reflectivity. Monastic workshops in the Himalayan belt refined this method over centuries, and the lineage was carried into India by weavers trained in the same school.
Three weavers shared the loom for about six months. The wool is hand-carded and lanolin-rich, sourced from highland sheep, and the silk is reeled from cocoons and twisted as a contrast yarn. Around two and a half million Tibetan loop-knots in total, every pass cut by hand against the rod.
The composition
A field of warm beige with a soft tonal drift across the surface where wool and silk meet. The pattern is restrained, an open central reserve framed by a wide unbroken border that lets the silk highlights catch raking light. From one end of the room the rug reads as a single warm ivory; from the other it reads as a bone field with a luminous border. The two-plane effect is the point of a wool and silk Tibetan and is impossible in a single-fibre piece.
What you are buying
Comparable Tibetan wool and silk pieces from the studios that supply the West sit between forty and ninety thousand US dollars at retail. This is the same construction, the same fibre quality, the same loom discipline, made in India and priced for the Indian collector. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the silk catches more light as the wool wears slightly to expose it.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carries a primary living arrangement with all furniture floating on the rug. The neutral palette suits oak, walnut, blackened steel, and limestone equally. Diffuse natural light brings the silk forward; downlights at night render the field as a quiet warm ground for whatever the room is built around.
Conservation
Rotate one hundred and eighty degrees each spring and autumn. Vacuum suction only with the beater bar off, twice a week in primary traffic. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub a silk-blended pile. Hand wash by a wool and silk trained conservator every five years. With this care the rug runs seventy years and longer.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
